Barco contributes to identification of Queen Nefertiti’s mummy

Barco’s CORONIS® medical flat panel grayscale display system used for detailed investigation of Egyptian queen Nefertiti’s mummy

KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 27 August 2003 – Barco’s CORONIS® medical flat panel grayscale display system has played a crucial role in the investigation of a 3500-year-old Egyptian mummy, which could be identified as the legendary queen Nefertiti. The research was conducted by a team of British archaeologists, using cutting-edge X-ray technology. To visualize the legendary mummy, the scientists installed a dual-head CORONIS® 2MP flat panel display in a chamber next to the tomb in the Valley of Kings.

Thorough examination by a multidisciplinary team of scientists showed that the mummy, which was found in a tomb in the Valley of Kings, could be dated to Egypt’s late 18th dynasty. By using cutting-edge X-ray technology and the dual-head CORONIS® 2MP flat panel display system, detailed scans of the mummy could be compared to existing data of queen Nefertiti. New clues in the investigation, such as ancient jewelry within a smashed-in chest cavity of the mummy, led to the assumption of Nefertiti’s discovery. The scientists also found a ripped-off arm among the remaining wrappings, which was bent up in a way that was only allowed for Egyptian royalty.

So far, little was known about this mummy, which was discovered in 1898 by French archaeologists in a side-chamber of the tomb of Amenhotep II. Investigation had stopped as the mummy disappeared into the archives as “mummy 61072”, or “Younger Lady”. Only recently, new impulses for further research were given by scientist Joann Fletcher, who is the field director of the University of York’s Mummy Research Team. She compared the appearance of Nefertiti’s mummy with the royal Egyptian fashion of that time and believes that the mummy can be identified as queen Nefertiti.

The CORONIS® 2MP flat panel display was provided by Xograph Imaging Systems Ltd, Barco’s reseller in the UK. The British archaeologists chose CORONIS® because of its optimal image representation. CORONIS® proved to be very reliable and competent in severe environmental conditions, such as heat, dust and humidity. With their high contrast ratio and luminance, CORONIS® display systems are ideally suited for use in dark rooms and ambient light environments. Other important benefits include low weight and compactness, which was crucial in the limited space environment of Nefertiti’s burial chamber.
