Barco Virtual-Reality Visualization Technology for Schlumberger’s Oasis iCenter in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.
On September 16th, Schlumberger Oilfield Services officially inaugurated its new Collaborative Virtual-Reality Center in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. to support real-time reservoir management activities and initiatives in the Middle East and Asia Region. Mr. Mohamed B. Al Qubaisi, Deputy Director E&P of ADNOC and Mr. Chakib Sbiti, President of Schlumberger Oilfield Services for the Middle East and Asia, solemnly cut the ribbon. The Oasis iCenter is a secure networked environment for collaboration, integration and interpretation of Geoscientific data. It features the world’s first three-channel passive stereo, curved screen, rear-projected visualization installation.
To achieve optimal results, Schlumberger commisioned Barco for the total visualization concept: from the need assessment and design consulting, to developing the mechanical structure and defining the screen composition for a perfect match with the chosen projection technology. The optimal solution, delivering highest stereo brightness efficiency, proved to be the combination of a proprietary developed, tailor made Barco PASCAD screen with three dual-stacked BarcoReality SIM 6 projectors with built-in proprietary WARP 6™ Non-Linear Image Mapping. By predistorting the image inside the projector, a correct geometry can be achieved on curved screens like that of the Oasis iCenter without requiring any additional computational power on the Image Generator’s side. The three dual-stacked SIM 6 projectors with WARP 6 create a highly immersive, passive stereo environment, which is ideal for the visualization of large complex data sets on a curved screen.“By combining Schlumberger technical expertise and the state-of-the-art display technology of Barco, the Oasis iCenter offers an interactive work environment for our customers to easily evaluate, develop and manage their complex reservoirs and enhance their ultimate recovery,” said Chakib Sbiti, president of Schlumberger Oilfield Services for the Middle East and Asia.
The Oasis iCenter enables multi-disciplinary exploration teams to collaborate locally and remotely so that they can understand complex geoscientific data and make decisions in real-time, in order to enhance the decision-making and planning processes. Thanks to the collaborative and immersive environment of the iCenter, multi-disciplinary teams can see and evaluate seismic data, complex reservoir models, well logs and geologic cross sections. This process enables the teams to anticipate all kinds of problems, which saves both time and money.
