Barco’s RFD-357: a 10-bit rugged flat panel display for demanding naval applications

Kortrijk, Belgium, 27 April 2010 – Barco announces the release of the RFD-357, the new rugged flat panel display. The first display solution for naval applications to offer 10-bit image quality, this high-resolution (1920 x 1200) widescreen monitor is suited to be used in combination with a wide range of hi-res sensors. The rugged design, small footprint and guaranteed long-term support make the RFD-357 the perfect display for all military vessels.

Bringing superior image quality to the demanding environment of military vessels was Barco's focus point when designing the RFD-357. This is not only achieved by the high-quality 10-bit 22.5” widescreen LCD, but also by incorporating the highly efficient proprietary Barco LED backlighting. This innovative solution offers a large number of advantages, including a longer lifetime, increased shock and vibration performance, stable light output under any thermal conditions, and extremely high dimming ratio. Furthermore, Barco's unique patented LCD Flicker Compensation (LFC) allows operators to view images with high contrast and high density (such as sonar or dense tactical data) without distracting flicker effects.

The intelligent design of the RFD-357 reduces the depth of the unit without any quality compromises. Although the display is completely fan-less, the intelligent thermal management system allows the fully sealed RFD-357 to be used in ambient conditions up to 50 °C (122 °F). In order to become the most reliable display on the market, the RFD-357 was designed to cope with the MIL-S-901D, Grade A shock requirements for surface and sub-surface naval applications – the toughest naval shock specification in the world. Furthermore, the display is suited to be used in ECDIS systems.

“Combining superior image quality with a thin, rugged design, the RFD-357 meets the requirements of military vessels – today and tomorrow,” says Lieven Claeys, Barco's newly appointed Market Director Naval. “The careful selection of components allows Barco to guarantee long-term support of up to 7 years without any product changes. Optionally, the display comes with high-performance touch screen functionality, so that fluent drag-and-drop actions can be performed with any available stylus device. All this makes the RFD-357 the perfect choice for future-proof naval applications.”

The RFD-357 is being showcased for the first time at the Barco booth of Sea Air Space 2010 (3-5 May 2010).
