Barco enhances collaborative innovation at Wright Brothers Institute / Tec^Edge “Collaboratory”
Dayton, OH – Barco, a leading global provider of visual display systems for presentation and analysis, has developed a sophisticated multi-user solution for Dayton’s Wright Brothers Institute (WBI). Utilizing the power of Barco’s network-centric iCon H600 projector, researchers at the WBI’s Tec^Edge “Collaboratory” benefit from the advanced data interaction and cooperative analysis it offers.
Tec^Edge began operations in January 2007 as an operational element of the WBI. The institute’s basic mission is to develop and grow world-class, state-of-the-art research and development collaborations.
“Tec^Edge achieves technological innovation breakthroughs by providing a neutral ground for intense collaboration between government, industry and academia,” said Martin Steiger of Tec^Edge. “We employ the Barco iCon H600 as a foundational collaborative tool that empowers patrons to actively participate in Tec^Edge events and workshops. Projecting their laptop images and ideas simultaneously on the Barco iCon, they become more than passive listeners: they become part of the solution process.”
Barco’s iCon H600, the visual core of the Tec^Edge Collaboratory, is a Windows-integrated, network-centric projection system with the ability to display both networked and connected sources in multiple windows simultaneously. Through proprietary server software, up to four laptop users can simultaneously project data through an Ethernet connection or a local area network. The iCon’s source windows can be dragged, rotated, and tiled for intuitive analysis.
Barco installed the iCon system in early 2007. Already, Collaboratory researchers have put it to good use with advanced presentations and elaborate group discussions. The Tec^Edge facility has also hosted workshops in which small groups share a week’s worth of research in a cross-comparative fashion for group feedback. The end result is an environment ripe for team-based problem-solving.
“Barco has installed over 1,000 visual display systems in a wide range of virtual and augmented reality markets worldwide,” said Dr. Al Herman, vice president and general manager for Barco’s simulation business. “Our solution for the WBI Tec^Edge Collaboratory is another example of the important role our systems play in enhancing productive teamwork and innovation.”
