Barco to upgrade Royal Danish Navy's ship bridge simulator

COPENHAGEN, Denmark – Visualization specialist Barco is proud to announce that it has been contracted to upgrade the Royal Danish Navy’s ship bridge simulator at Holmen, Denmark. The Royal Danish Navy selected Barco’s high performance simulation systems for their unique geometry correction, edge blending and color uniformity optimizations. The new system will enter service June 2007.

Denmark has a historical role as one of Europe’s greatest naval powers, and to this day, it retains a sizeable fleet charged with the defense of Denmark’s land and sea territories, and the protection of its environment. As a NATO member, it also participates in global peace keeping, crisis control and humanitarian missions. For its navy personnel to be the best trained in the world, the Royal Danish Navy was looking to replace its existing ship bridge simulator with a system that offers superior performance.

For this reason, they chose Barco to develop and install a simulation system consisting of five Sim 5R projectors. This system will offer one, seamless wide viewing area across a cylindrical screen with a 5m radius and a 185° field of view, as is typical for military vessels. “Compared to its competitors, Barco’s display capabilities really stood out,” explains Michael Brinch, senior project manager for the Royal Danish Navy, “We were impressed by the superior quality of their simulation technology, and the smooth interaction of all its system components. It convinced us that Barco was the right way to go, and we hope to do similar projects in the future.”

To realize this natural, seamless image, the Sim 5R projectors employ edge-blending that eliminates all lines where projections converge, and use both DynaColor and constant light output (CLO) technology to guarantee consistent color and brightness levels across the entire screen. Advanced geometry corrections further ensure that the image is projected on the cylindrical screen correctly, without distortions. The Sim 5R’s single-chip DLP technology makes it very suitable for maritime applications due to its outstanding performance in intensive-use applications, and its ability to render high-resolution images at the relatively slower speeds maritime simulation requires.
