Xilinx and Barco announce single-chip JPEG2000 implementation
Jointly developed solutions simplify implementation of JPEG2000 encoding and decoding for broadcast and digital cinema industry
Amsterdam, 7 September 2007 – At the International Broadcasters Convention (IBC), Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX), the world’s leading supplier of programmable solutions, and Barco Silex, the leading center of micro-electronics of Barco, announced the joint development of single chip JPEG2000 encoder and decoder solutions. Based on the successful implementation of Barco Silex JPEG2000 cores on Xilinx® Virtex™-5 FPGAs, the solutions significantly reduce the cost of broadcast and Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) archiving, post-production, distribution and server systems. The JPEG2000 solutions will be demonstrated at this week’s IBC, Xilinx Stand 10.421 and Barco Silex Stand 10.620, in the RAI Congress Centre, Amsterdam.
“Our success in implementing JPEG2000 cores on Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGAs provides the broadcast and digital cinema industry with access to JPEG2000 board solutions, offering a unique combination of high-performance (real-time HD or DCI) and cost-effective programmability,” said Frédéric Devisch, Sales and Marketing Manager at Barco Silex.
Robert Green, Senior Manager for Broadcast Vertical Marketing added, “Barco Silex and Xilinx have demonstrated efficient implementation of intellectual property levering best-in-class FPGAs, thereby delivering significant benefits to the broadcast and digital cinema industry. Designers can now integrate JPEG2000 encoder and decoding solutions, taking benefit of in maximum flexibility and time to market without compromising overall system cost.”
Barco Silex has developed and implemented JPEG2000 hardware cores since 2002. For enhanced security, Barco Silex’ IP portfolio also includes crypto cores such as Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and Public Key Crypto Engines. As a custom electronic design house, Barco Silex can also provide integration design support as well as chip and board solutions.
