Barco Plays MiTRIX at 2007 CMT Music Awards
I-Mag Video joins forces with Country Music Television, Inc. (CMT) and Camouflage Films to stage the 2007 CMT Music Awards, using a creative array of Barco LED, projection and MiTRIX modules.
Sacramento, CA — May 14,2007 — Barco, a leading manufacturer in display technology, announces that Nashville-based I-Mag Video selected a full complement of Barco LED and projection gear for the 16 April nationwide broadcast of the 2007 CMT Music Awards. Originating from Nashville’s Curb Event Center on the campus of Belmont University, the show was simulcast in both SD and HD, using MTV’s new “Pegasus” mobile HD production truck.
In conjunction with CMT, the show was produced by Audrey Morrissey from Camouflage Films, and the set was designed by Anton Goss, from Consortium Studios in Venice, California. Using multiple video elements across the stage and the thrust, the set required a complex array of front and rear projection, movable “slivers” of video, large format video walls and decorative LED trim. To realize Goss’ concept, I-Mag supplied eight movable columns of Barco D7 tiles, two movable D7 headers, one large Barco OLite 510 wall, three OLite 510 towers and two 18x24 projection screens — using double-stacked Barco FLM R20+ large venue projectors. To cap the design, Barco’s new MiTRIX modules were used as the front fascia for the stairs and as a decorative “handrail” that framed the performers at the end of the thrust.
Tony Macre, Director of Engineering for I-Mag, commented on the installation. “This is the third year we’ve worked on the CMT awards, and there’s a lot more video on this show than ever before,” said Macre. “The Barco products are very user-friendly as far as processing goes, and especially the way we can easily map images into the video columns that Anton created. Overall, we’re very proud to be working with CMT and the designers on this broadcast.”
With a background in rock-and-roll, game shows and awards shows, Anton Goss’ recent credits include sets for Tyra Banks, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, and Deal or No Deal. “In this small college arena, I had to create a big stage presence, and a quick walk-on from the audience in order to keep up the energy,” said Goss. “And that’s the impetus for the ‘video’ stairs with MiTRIX, and the MiTRIX zipper that encapsulates the presenters. It’s very cool, and I particularly like the low-rez, transparent nature of it. There may even be a tag line that says it all — country tech.”
Audrey Morrissey, the 2007 CMT Music Awards’ producer, worked at MTV for nine years on big event specials and award shows, prior to forming Camouflage Films. “This year, the freshest note it that we’ve added more video, and Anton is largely responsible for that,” noted Morrissey. “We love the fact that specific video screens will only take slivers of a frame, to make it much more abstract. Yes, it’s exponentially more complicated than in years past, but with I-Mag’s help and all the talented crew, we’re proud of the fact that we’ve brought a distinct style and energy to this broadcast.”
“Once again, I-MAG Video has designed a superb technical solution to a remarkable set design," said Steve Scorse, Vice President of Sales for Barco’s Media and Entertainment division, “and we’re very pleased that they continue to select Barco projection and LED products. Whether it’s for the CMT Awards or Rascal Flatts’ national tour, their engineering expertise continues to generate excitement for the every audience.”
