Barco supplies Head-Up repeater displays for Czech Air Force L-159 cockpit conversion project
AAAA, Atlanta, GA, USA, 9 May 2007 - Visualization specialist Barco has won a contract from AERO Vodochody a.s., Odolena Voda, Czech Republic, to deliver high-quality Cockpit Head Down Displays for integration into the L-159 trainer fleet of the Czech Air Force. The contract is part of a conversion program aimed at rebuilding four single-seat L-159s into two-seat trainer versions.
For this modification project, AERO selected Barco's 5 x 4 inch Cockpit Head Down Displays (CHDD), which are acclaimed for their excellent video quality and readability in both bright and dark ambient conditions while meeting stringent environmental requirements. Each modified L-159 trainer shall be equipped with two Barco displays. They will be used as repeaters of the front position's Primary Flight Display and Head Up Display respectively. A Video cross link communication path between both units will enable system redundancy.Barco's CHDD adapts easily to various new and retrofit cockpit architectures. This high-level flexibility in terms of configuration and interfacing was a major plus for the L-159 avionics modification program.
The AERO L-159 advanced multi-role light combat and training aircraft is based on the proven airframe design and aerodynamic configuration of the L-39 Albatros and L-59 family of basic and advanced jet trainers. The aircraft's Electronic Flight Instrument System provides multi-mission capabilities, including target sensing, controls and displays, stores management, communication, navigation and identification, self-protection, and data loading and recording. Because of this, the L-159 is deployable in a variety of operational roles such as close air support, tactical reconnaissance, air defense, counter insurgency, border patrol, anti-ship missions, lead-in fighter and weapons training.
