Barco joins the largest outdoor digital cinema premiere

On 26 May at Lowe's Motor Speedway, three Barco DP100 digital cinema projectors will be used in the world premiere of Disney/Pixar's new computer-animated feature, "CARS."

Sacramento, CA — 23 May 2006 — Barco announces that three D-Cine Premiere DP100 DLP Cinema projectors will play a key role at the world premiere of Disney/Pixar’s new computer-animated motion picture, CARS. This marks the first multi-screen outdoor digital cinema movie premiere. Scheduled for Friday 26 May at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina, the sell-out event features four custom-built screens plus a state-of-the-art sound system — all custom installed at the speedway’s turn #2.

Each of the four movie screens is 115 feet wide by 50 feet tall, using three dedicated digital cinema projectors (two for enhanced brightness due to the remarkable screen size, and one for redundancy). Each Barco DP100 offers 2048x1080 native pixel resolution and a 2000:1 contrast ratio, and is based on Texas Instruments’ superb DLP Cinema™ technology.

Over 30,000 fans are expected to attend the premiere, including the film’s director, John Lasseter, key players from Pixar Animation Studios and The Walt Disney Studios, and industry leaders from digital cinema manufacturers including Barco. Produced by Disney/Pixar, the film "CARS" opens in theaters on 9 June 2006.

Dana Corey, Senior Director of Marketing of Barco's Media and Entertainment division in North America, commented on the premiere. “We’re extremely honored to participate in this important event, at a very unique venue here at Lowe’s,” said Corey. “Not only is it a first as a film premiere, and a first for the digital cinema industry, but it may just be the largest crowd ever to view a film that is projected digitally.”
