Vienna Traffic Authority obtains Austria's largest display wall solution from Barco

Kuurne, Belgium - In the new traffic control center Erdberg in Vienna, Austria’s largest display wall is being set up. Under the project management of ABB AG Vienna, Barco is building an approximately 50 meters wide rear-projection display wall to increase operational safety.

With about 8,000 employees and more than 730 million passengers, Vienna Traffic Authority is among the largest public transportation services in Europe. In order to meet the requirements of operational safety of the fleet and the corresponding infrastructure, a new traffic control center will be established in Erdberg. Barco will provide a display wall based on the latest rear-projection technology, deployed in the modern control center with oval layout, for a concise representation of the lines and electricity networks.

The display wall consists of 144 (48 x 3) rear-projection modules with a diagonal of 50 inches. Primarily only 76 modules are going to be equipped with rear projection units. Further modules can be added and upgraded as and when required at a later date. The display wall is divided into several areas, monitoring different underground lines as well as displaying the electricity network. These logically defined display walls are controlled separately. The visualization is realized by control system pictures in world picture technology, which have been specified by the department ’Netzleittechnik’ of ABB AG Vienna in close cooperation with the customer. Particular attention has been paid to the ergonomic needs, especially concerning picture size and resolution.

The rear-projection systems of Barco`s Overview D series feature innovative designs, e.g. dual lamp systems and optical dimming for brightness adjustment. These features were required to ensure the operational efficiency and display quality. The technology and Barco’s ability to meet the Traffic Authority of Vienna’s economic criteria are the main reasons for choosing Barco.

The installation of the display wall will be finished by the end of 2005. After a successful trial period the infrastructure will be in place for the Vienna Traffic Authority to continuously improve operational safety.
