Barco’s cutting-edge CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO technology obtains FDA 510k approval

Innovative technology makes CORONIS 5MP MAMMO the inevitable first choice for digital mammography imaging

KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 31 August 2004 – Today, Barco communicated it has obtained FDA approval for its cutting-edge CORONIS 5MP MAMMO display system. The FDA 510k approval denotes that the CORONIS 5MP MAMMO product, integrating several cutting-edge technologies to refine clinical diagnosis and increase productivity, has been officially cleared for use in digital mammography applications by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The clearance comes only a few weeks after the FDA’s approval for Barco’s CRT-based MGD 521M mammography display and marks the company’s front-running position as a provider of innovative imaging technology in the field of mammography and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) imaging.

The system builds on proven CORONIS® technology, and introduces several pioneering innovations, including Per Pixel Uniformity (PPU) and Defect Pixel Compensation (DPC), to further optimize accuracy and provide the ultimate diagnostic confidence. With the 510k clearance, the FDA has officially approved these proprietary technologies for use in today’s mammography applications”, explains Albert Xthona, Product Manager Digital Mammography. “With the new CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO and the previously cleared MGD 521M, Barco now offers its customers both CRT-based and LCD-based display systems that meet the highest standards for digital mammography imaging”, he adds.

Barco’s unique PPU technology, integrated in the new CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO, measures and adjusts the luminance output of every individual pixel, thereby eliminating distracting screen noise. To ensure that no information is missing, CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO also features Barco’s proprietary Defect Pixel Compensation (DPC), which detects and identifies defect pixels in each individual display. Thanks to DPC and PPU, CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO raises the bar for modern flat panel imaging, providing unmatched image accuracy and ultimate diagnostic confidence at all times.

To allow for an efficient workflow, the advanced viewing system comes with a high-speed BARCOMED® 5MP2FH display controller, which enables ultra-fast image loading and very smooth roaming. Furthermore, CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO unites all advanced features that have contributed to the success of the CORONIS® family. One of these is Barco’s I-GUARD® sensor technology, which continually guards and adjusts the luminance output of the actual diagnostic viewing area at the front of the display. By doing so, I-GUARD® ensures continuous DICOM accuracy over time and across displays. Additionally, CORONIS® 5MP MAMMO is equipped with DURALIGHT®, Barco’s long lifetime backlight, which prolongs the average lifetime of the display’s backlights by a factor 3 to 5. DURALIGHT® comes with a 5 year warranty.
