Barco Digital Cinema Celebrates 50th 2k Digital Cinema Projector Installation

Its latest DLP CinemaTM installation confirms Barco as the leading provider of 2k resolution Digital Projectors.

This month’s landmark achievement of its 50th D-Cine Premier DP100 DLP CinemaTM projector installation has underscored the company’s leading position in the supply of digital projectors in a market now expected to grow dramatically in the next 12 months.

The installation, the latest in a steady stream made in Post Production and Exhibition worldwide since the introduction of the DP100 2k resolution projector at Cinema Expo 2003, was for a digital projector purchased by the Hollywood based EFILM facility house for use in its Digital Intermediate suites.

Commenting on the company’s success to date in a business pioneered by Barco since the early 1990’s Sjoerd De Clerck General Manager of Barco Digital Cinema commented that ”it has been extremely rewarding to note Barco’s progress since our appointment as a Licensee for the Texas Instruments DLP CinemaTM technology in 2000, and the introduction of our first Digital Cinema projector that same year. We have since developed a full range of projector and control solutions for both Digital Cinema and Alternative Content applications that now literately lead the market ”.

In fact since the sale of the company’s first ever digital cinema projector to Eclair – one of Europe’s leading Post Production houses - Barco has gone on to pioneer Digital Cinema installations worldwide.

Orders for 20 projectors for Eng Wah in Singapore and 10 for Kinepolis in Belgium have led the way in Exhibition and are now supplemented by other installations worldwide such as Sahara in India, Major Cineplex in Thailand, the China Film Group, Folkets Hus and Parker in Sweden, Cinema Millennium, Portugal and Rave Theatres in North America.

In Post Production Eclair now uses a total of four units, including a DP100 recently installed in its Paris studios – a trend now evident in installations in Facility Houses and Screening Rooms such those in for Panavision, IVC and Dolby in North America.

Confirming the industry wide view that the Digital Cinema business will achieve its long awaited take off within a year Sjoerd De Clerck added “I am confident that the achievement of this first landmark in the company’s installation schedule is the first of many and a reflection of the trend towards the much higher frequency, quality and value of our sales discussions since the industry acceptance of 2k DLP CinemaTM projection technology at ShoWest 2003. Now these initial installations are established we are confident that the Industry and Cinema Patrons will quickly realize the benefits and come to accept the quality and operating advantages as quite normal”.
