Barco equips Danish Broadcast Corporation with its iStudio broadcast monitoring solution

Kuurne, 6 July 2004 – Barco is pleased to announce it will provide a state-of-the-art total monitoring solution for Danish Broadcast Corporation in its new headquarters in Ørestad Nord, Denmark. Barco’s technology was uniquely qualified to meet the needs of Danish Broadcast Corporation (DR).

In 2006 Danish Broadcast Corporation (DR) will be relocating all its present sites in Copenhagen to a new 32 acres home in Ørestad Nord. The intention is to make the new DR multimedia house in DR BYEN the focal point for creativity and innovation. At the new multimedia house, people will work in light, airy, open spaces with room for many different work processes ranging from great art to craftsmanship and mass production.
In future, DR TV & radio programmes will be produced, processed and transmitted digitally. For this purpose a technology project has been set up in addition to the building project. The technology project will define the production tools and infrastructure for DR BYEN; all equipment will be used across the traditional divisions between TV, radio and the Internet. This state-of-the-art technology will support the DR mission to create a European multimedia powerhouse for public service programmes in a setting that will remain up-to-date. Danish Broadcast Corporation chose Barco to provide its monitoring solutions in 5 studios at the site.
Barco installed 4 display walls of 3x1 modules in 4 studios and one display wall with a 2x1 configuration in a 5th studio, each consisting of 67” projection modules with SXGA resolution (1280x1024).

Barco’s iStudio is currently the most advanced all-in-one solution for managed monitoring. It consists of high-quality displays with rear-screen projection integrating the latest DLPTM technology, the Hydra graphic controller, and Web-based operating wall management software. One projection module can display up to 60 video or audio windows simultaneously. The controlware was selected, among other reasons, because of its ability to be upgraded, offering Danish Broadcast Corporation the most future-proof front-end available.

iStudio can display a wide range of source types, covering practically all the standards commonly required by the industry. These include analog and digital video on PAL, SECAM and NTSC, HD-SDI and analog RGB-HD, in 4:3 or 16:9 formats and computer images through analog RGB or digital DVI. Any additional information, such as computer-generated objects, digital or analog clocks, animated logos, and counters as well as tally indicators, source identifications, and audiometers, is flawlessly displayed. You can position any content exactly where you want.

Barco was selected thanks to its market leadership position in projection technology and proven expertise in display wall control systems. With broadcast reference sites all over the world, Barco was able to clearly illustrate its extensive project, system and user experience. Other factors that undoubtedly reinforced Barco’s predominance included Barco’s quality & flexibility as well as its on-site training.

Barco Control Rooms has successfully completed iStudio projects for major players all over the world, e.g. Telecinco, Kosmos TV, NTL, Optus TV, Orbit, Pan Am Sat, Prime Television, Time Warner, Turner, VRT, France 2, France 3, Euskaltel, Disney Channel, Echo Star, DirecTV, CNN
International, Canal Satéllite, Alfacam, ABC-KGO... and is setting the standard in a number of digitization projects in terrestrial digital broadcasting, e.g. Tokyo (NTV, TBS), Osaka (MBS, KTV, TVO) and Nagoya (NBN, CTV, THK).
