Barco’s revolutionary visual display system improves military flight training

Scottsdale, AZ– Barco demonstrates its new rear-projected, continuous field-of-view immersive display system for military training at IMAGE Conference 2004, July 12 – 16.

“We’ve collaborated with the military to develop a breakthrough in rear-projection display system technology,” said Bob Clodfelter, Vice President of Engineering at Barco Simulation. “This new, unique cylindrical rear-projection system is specifically designed to improve training performance and increase the military’s effectiveness.”

This year Barco highlights its new compact, realistic immersive display system in an actual helicopter flight simulation application in conjunction with Quantum 3D. The system is powered by two Barco SIM 4s that project onto a unique cylindrical, rear-projection screen, creating a continuous field-of-view. The two-channel, edge-blended display system eliminates distracting shadows produced in front-projected display systems, as well as eradicates cumbersome, view-interrupting bezels found in LCD panel systems. In addition, Barco will also provide all conference projection systems for IMAGE at this year’s meeting.

Barco’s SIM 4 is a single-chip DLP™ projector with SXGA resolution, designed especially for simulation and immersive applications. It’s equipped with Barco’s Flex 4 geometry distortion technology, which is integrated in the projector’s compact industrial design, to support virtually any type of curved-screen application. Barco’s SIM 4 offers optional, proprietary Optical Soft Edge Matching (OSEM): custom-made optical filters to achieve truly seamless blending for multi-channel systems, maintaining full contrast ratio.

The projectors have chromatically matched optical engines with additional DynaColor™ electronic color space transformations for elimination of channel-to-channel color variations. They also utilize Extended Contrast Ratio, an integrated, optical dimmer for use in night scenery and light output equalization. In addition, SIM 4s have two optional choices available, Constant Light Output (CLO) and linked CLO with linked DynaColor. CLO measures and controls the light output, allowing new and used lamps to be mixed and eliminating the need to replace all lamps at the same time. DynaColor allows the user to digitally set the primary and secondary color coordinates in order to obtain perfect color matching across a system.

The IMAGE Conference, first held in 1977, is sponsored by the IMAGE Society Inc., a non-profit, technical association for the advancement of visual simulation along with other virtual reality technologies and their applications.
