Barco receives new orders from Lockheed Martin for Q-70 console program

KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 9 June 2004 – Barco has received several follow-on orders, worth over $3 million, from Lockheed Martin for the delivery of graphics cards and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) rugged flat panel displays within the framework of the AN/UYQ-70 shipboard console program. Barco’s RFD 251S displays and high-performance AVS 5100 graphics generators will be integrated into various naval applications within the US and abroad. The new orders follow earlier deliveries of
high-performance graphics controllers, video frame grabbers and rugged displays for the program.

Barco has demonstrated innovative support of critical COTS management issues for the military market for many years. The recent orders comprise the delivery of
20.1-inch RFD 251S Rugged Flat Displays and AVS 5100 graphics generators, which will be integrated in a variety of Lockheed Martin AN/UYQ-70 systems installed in submarines and Aegis-equipped surface ships. Specific system installations include the COTS Refresh Program for Aegis-equipped Cruiser Conversion, the AN/UYQ-70 Command and Decision (C&D) console and the Next Generation Peripheral (NGP) and Ship Self Defense System (SSDS).

Barco’s RFD 251S Rugged Flat Displays are specifically engineered for use in naval vessel environments. The units feature a 20.1-inch MIL-tailored rugged flat display, meeting the most demanding shock, temperature and vibration safety standards. The unit’s front bonded optical stack ensures optimum optical performance at all times and offers a truly rugged, condensation-free visualization solution under all conditions. Moreover, the RFD 251S naval displays are equipped with Automatic Phase Adjust technology, offering clear and sharp images over time. The units that were selected by Lockheed Martin also feature Barco’s patented LCD Flicker Compensation solution, which enables naval operators to view acoustic sonar images without the constant change in luminance (flicker) that is characteristic of LCDs in these types of naval applications.

For this part of the AN/UYQ-70 program, Lockheed Martin also ordered Barco’s AVS 5100 high-performance graphics generators, specifically designed to support
high-resolution, drawing-intensive software. Thanks to their smart architecture, the AVS 5100 boards provide the flexibility to generate graphics data in separate underlay, overlay and superoverlay planes, with simultaneous display of external video sources. Furthermore, the AVS 5100 display controllers feature separate busses for video and/or radar data insertion.

All displays and graphics generators will be delivered to Lockheed Martin, the prime contractor for the AN/UYQ-70 program, by the third quarter of this year. Installation into the consoles will begin immediately after delivery.
