Barco state-of-the-art visualization solutions will dazzle visitors at the Technology Museum & Science Center of Thessaloniki, Greece
Unique top attractions at the newly built Technology Museum & Science Center in Thessaloniki (Greece) include the Motion Simulator Theater (grand opening scheduled within April 2004) for which Telmaco, the main system integrator, in cooperation with Barco designed an impressive virtual reality projection system, and the digital planetarium, featuring Barco’s full-sky I-Dome planetarium projection system.
Barco’s I-Dome solution for the 18-m diameter, 23° tilted planetarium includes six Barco 909 split-pack CRT projectors that handle the complete visualization, including pre-distortion and blending of the images to form a single overwhelming image over the total hemispherical dome surface. For accurate alignment of all projected images and easy maintenance, laser array alignment units are placed immediately underneath the projectors. The lasers project reference points on the dome, allowing for accurate adjustment and periodic realignment of the projection system.
“Barco’s I-Dome solution with 909 split-pack CRT projectors delivers deep blacks for perfect starry skies, while allowing a complete integration in a limited space as the projector head is separate from the electronics chassis,” explains Mr. Vassilis Kyriazis, Director of Sales & Management at Telmaco.
“Barco’s I-Dome digital projection taking charge of the complete visualization part of the planetarium was an important plus point for choosing Barco,” Mr. Vassilis Kyriazis continues, “as it allows to use the planetarium not only for the re-enactment of celestial data, but also to project whatever content is provided by the computers. The planetarium can also be used as a virtual reality simulator, e.g. for academic purposes, giving medical students the chance to observe surgical procedures in full detail in virtual reality.”
Also located in the new Technology Museum & Science Center is the Motion Simulator Theater. Four Barco SIM 6 LCD projectors produce impressive high-definition stereoscopic images on a 10-meter wide by 3.60-meter high screen. During each show, 18 visitors seated on three motion-based platforms are projected into a fantastic voyage of discovery in yet unknown virtual worlds.
Telmaco’s & Barco’s commitment to the Technology Museum and Science Center at Thessaloniki for the full-dome Planetarium, as well as for the Motion Simulation Theater, underscores that Barco and Telmaco, the experienced local solution provider and representative, are not only the suppliers of innovative projectors but also command broad skills and experience when it comes to realizing complete visualization solutions, including fully optimized stereoscopic projection systems.
