Unequalled realism for fast-jet training on multifaceted displays

London – At ITEC 2004 Barco demonstrated its solution for multifaceted displays with near eye-limiting resolution.

Multifaceted displays have always been important when teaching the skills associated with single-seat fighters and attack missions. In most faceted displays, the pilot’s eyes are only 40 inches from the center of each screen; the “full field of view” must offer real to life detail – without any latency or motion artifacts – to allow fast recognition of hostile targets and threats.

The latest state-of-the-art tiled projection solution for multifaceted displays, demonstrated at the Barco booth, offers near eye-limiting resolution. The system combines four SIM6 Ultra II projectors with incorporated advanced WARP6 geometric distortion, transport delay reduction, optical soft-edge matching, and DynaColor™ color matching to produce a single picture with a resolution of 8 million pixels on a screen 2m wide by 1.5m high. A new, efficient UHP illumination system gives the scenery a total brightness of 10,000 ANSI lumen, which allows training to take place in any normal daylight environment.

Equally important for fast-jet training, the visualization system does not introduce latency or disturbing motion artifacts. Combat pilots train to make split-second decisions based on the behavior of distant objects while maneuvering in high-g. Barco’s tiled solution for multifaceted displays includes impressive application-specific optimizations such as Transport Delay Reduction (TDR™) and True Motion Reproduction. TDR ensures that all possible image corrections for the tiled system result in an imperceptible delay reduced to less than three lines on-screen, while True Motion Reproduction (TMR™) avoids smearing and preserves sharpness of moving images.

xRACU™, Barco’s flexible projector control system allows you to operate, calibrate, configure, and diagnose multiple Barco projectors from a single hand-held controller. The first installation of AutoAlignment for a rear-projected faceted display system (11 channels) was at Luke Air Force Base for Lockheed Martin.
