Barco wows audiences with spectacular lighting array at Austin City Limits' new broadcast studio/live concert venue

The brand new ACL Live at The Moody Theater in Austin, Texas, is opening to rave reviews, hosting a unique mix of musical acts from Willie Nelson to Devo. Illuminating the stage for performers is a combination of Barco's creative LED and High End Systems' automated lighting fixtures, industry-leading media servers and lighting controllers, all used to create spectacular effects.

Rancho Cordova, CA USA – 6 April 2011 – Digital and automated lighting pioneer High End Systems – a Barco company - is bringing up the lights at ACL Live, Austin's newest live music venue and home of Austin City Limits, the longest running televised music series in the US. Barco and its wholly owned subsidiary, High End Systems (HES), supplied dynamic lighting fixtures powered by its latest controllers, an HES Axon Media Server and 40 intellaspots driven by a Road Hog™ Full Boar and a Wholehog® Expansion Wing. The iconic backdrop featuring the Austin skyline that has been viewed on PBS television stations for decades, is now backlit with 36 Barco Helix™ P1 flexible LED pixel strings and a Vizomo™ L1i LED image processing unit. HES also installed its dichroic filters for TV camera color correction on the conventional lights used throughout the venue.

ACL Live at The Moody Theater is a state-of-the-art, 2,750 person capacity live music venue, which will also serve as the new home of the KLRU-TV produced PBS program Austin City Limits. The venue will host 60-100 concerts a year, in addition to the nights that the Austin City Limits show will tape. Olden Lighting, an Austin company specializing in “illuminating Central Texas with professional lighting, theatrical equipment and design,” has been with Austin City Limits since the early 1980s. Walter Olden, Lighting Director for the television show, worked with ACL Live's Production Manager Billy Heaslip to develop the lighting design.

“We looked at lighting products from all over the industry to outfit this state-of-the-art broadcast studio,” stated Walter Olden, Lighting Director for Austin City Limits. “We chose the intellaspot because of its unique ability to serve as a powerful hard edged spot light but also provide variable soft-edged looks. The intellaspot gave us the ability to match the daylight color temperature that is needed in this studio setting.”

“ACL Live and KLRU's Austin City Limits present a wonderful opportunity to showcase the power of our intellaspots, especially when configured into such a large, impressive array,” commented Bill Morris, VP Video & Lighting Solutions for Barco North America. “When combined with Barco's Helix P1s, the lighting display adds a unique dimension to dramatically enliven the performances of these music legends.”

Barco's Helix P1 consists of 32 LED full color video-capable pixels and is the smart, cost-effective choice for creative LED setups when unusual display surfaces or architectural environments are part of the design. The Vizomo L1i, a powerful GPU-based digitizer, converts source signals from industry standards like SDI, HDMI/DVI into calibrated virtually mapped pixels for the LEDs. The Axon Media Server provides more than 1,400 stock media clips, with Collage Generator™ and Curved Surface Support. The intellaspot is an 850w hard edge fixture producing 20,000 lumens for extreme brightness despite low power consumption. The Road Hog Full Boar is a robust lighting controller enabling users to create, manage, edit and playback lighting to enhance any production environment. The Wholehog Expansion Wing adds 40 additional playbacks for any Wholehog console.
